Designing Relationships That Connect Smiles, Part 1: Project Design That Encourages Participation — Learning from Creative Director Hiroki Sakai

If there is only one thing in common at any job, it means that you can't avoid relationships with people. Engagement with people is bothersome and annoying. It's never a single line, and sometimes it is complicated to entangle with each other, but no matter how much you pull them in, they will always be repulsive or difficult.

However, if I can do it, I want to make the person involved smile and after all, I also want to smile.

To learn more about how to work in order for everyone involved to be happy, and whether there is a way to make people happy in the first place, I talked with creative director Hiromoto Sakai.

Listen to how sustainable projects can be implemented to bring everyone's involvement

Sakai is currently working as a creative director We are involved in a project involving community design that combines the maximization of corporate marketing value and the revitalization of urban development, while becoming a bridge between commercial facilities and local communities as one way to solve problems.

Community design may seem like a job entrusted by the government, but Mr. Sakai’s project is characterized as being part of an integrated communication strategy for companies that balance business and urban development with the aim to achieve this project in a sustainable manner through hands-on with large capital clients such as major railway companies and developers.

Mr. Sakai, who has created a gift-like structure in places where inorganic money is exchanged as it is, and worked closely with business, city development, economy and people's hearts, how can we do projects that satisfy everyone involved? How can we draw out everyone's involvement and realize sustainable projects? I would like to learn about tips useful when moving the project while working on our special feature "design of how to connect everyone's smile and engage".

First, the point of thinking that makes everyone involved happy; secondly, the point of communication that can be practiced to move people involved; and finally, Mr. Sakai will tell you what is important when you stand at the top of your project, such as controlling those involved.

The starting point is 500 yen a cup of coffee.

Mr. Sakai was originally a creator-oriented person who went to art school with the aim of becoming a designer, but when he saw his talented seniors collided against a big wall between business and manufacturing, I felt that designers had to enter into an upstream management strategy part as well, so we decided to open “Café Apartment” at Koenji Temple in order to make our own projects for their own money first.

Sakai says that it is not so different to serve a cup of coffee for 500 yen or run tens of millions of projects, where customers are called cafes with good friends.

"The cafe is the starting point for my business. 500 It seems easy to get a yen, and it's pretty hard. To keep the shop going, we ask our customers to repeat it. 500 We need to provide value beyond the yen. Through our primitive business of direct exchange between value and money, I have a great experience of embracing that feeling in my body. Even if it is said that you are doing something different than when I was doing cafes now, I will always do this in terms of presenting values and receiving rewards."

The place I interviewed this time was one of the projects that Mr. Sakai had been involved in, using an elevated building under Higashi-Koganei Station on the Chuo Line. Community Station Higashi-Koganei This year’s Good Design Award-winning commercial facility is getting a lot of attention.

When it comes to commercial facilities, there are only national chains, and in every city the same scenery is lined up like a copipe. Community Station Higashi-Koganei Most of the tenants in this area are local, but there is a place where business and warmth symbiosis can be conveyed by collaborating with convenience stores.

sakaisan was involved in this project. JR It was an elevated project between Mitaka Station and Tachikawa Station on the Chuo Line. JR We received consultation from the Central Line Mall that we would like to revitalize the entire area with people living and working in this region, in order to improve the value of the line.

And the first step in the project was “Nonowa,” an area magazine. How did Sakai propose and connect people involved? I was able to tell you a little bit about the back side.

"First of all, this underpass JR I thought it was necessary to create a soil that would be considered not only for the people in town, but also for the people of the city. In order to do so, we will proceed with development. JR It is important for the community to work together and create a bustling community. The development project that produces hako spends most of its energy on hako making, and I feel at risk that the story after hako has been discussed only at anomaly level. At first it may be crowded, but in order to continue the bustling, we must continue to drop money.

By creating a magazine, we're going to take people who are doing interesting things in the community JR By involving these people and holding talk events or workshops, there is an opportunity to connect with those who are interested in the activity. This will lead to a growing circle of people and a network of collaborators who support this project that will be very positive for the development process."

Instead of just proposing "Let's create a magazine," we look at the creation of sustainable bustle after Hako. JR It is said that they are working hard every day to create agreements and move projects with people by standing between the people involved, and having them translate their statements.

Starting tomorrow, we will introduce you to some specific learning points and learn from hints of ideas that make the people involved happy.
