What we do to avoid loneliness when working remotely

Tokyo, Osaka and Fukuoka. Members of our company currently live in these three cities only once a year. We have the freedom to work anywhere we like without the stress of commuting, but we are making small efforts to continue working remotely. Today I would like to introduce you to such an internal situation.

"Can you do your job without meeting a member of the company?" "Is it possible to breathe if I stay home all day?"

When we work remotely, that's often the question. The answer is "Yes!" They both have little impact on our work, regardless of where they are working or not. But when we never meet each other in an office every day, we don't have a breathtaking conversation like," and while it was very efficient, there were many things I thought about whether or not people outside my family were talking to me this week. So I started from spring on the occasion that Kuwata joined the group.

1. Morning ceremony

Our company’s core time is 9:30 to 16:30. At the start of our core time, we launch Skype and begin a morning rite. We talk about “the progress of yesterday’s work” and “the task that will be completed today”. The purpose of this morning rite is to improve the accuracy of estimates for the jobs you are assigned to; i. e. , make sure each person knows exactly how much resources they need to do one job, how much work they can do and when they can finish it.

When I asked Takasaki, the representative, why he started the morning rites and prayers: “I can’t think of a specific goal for one year because it is too far away, but I can imagine exactly what my goals are for every day so I wonder if any big job will ultimately be the most important thing in the day.” By setting the targets, I feel that this will lead to not wasting a day.

2. Weekly regular meetings

Every week, morning rites are a regular meeting. We share things like "Last week's reflection," "Last week's good work," "Last week's personal goodness" and "Last week's good work." Here we take the lead of complimenting people who aren't able to speak together in the same office every day, and because they don't meet each other everyday, it makes sense for us to acknowledge each other's work and have less experience of being approved by others.

In a private story, I was also able to grasp the troubles such as "I am glad that my son remembered the name of his friend at nursery school" and "the exterior wall construction of an apartment building is noisy these days so it is difficult to concentrate", you can also take a glimpse around each living environment, and have a deeper understanding with one another.

3. Thematic regular meetings

Once a month, the regular meeting sets themes and exchanges opinions. The themes so far have been “impressed works”, “I wish there was such a company,” “first time CD I bought it” and “my music transition”. We would like to introduce this content on another occasion.

we don't communicate with each other just by email.

When I asked Takasaki about the changes since I started practicing these three things, he said that “informal information can be shared and we have a lot of insight into each other’s sensitivities.” It seems that it is useful as communication to compensate for things that cannot be communicated or shared by e-mail only.

And sometimes, I think that Takasaki speaks enthusiastically about the theory of Johnny by borrowing a place called morning etiquette (everyone knows more about NewS!)I think it is also a place where an atmosphere like non-standard world has been nurtured.

What kind of initiatives are you taking at your company or organization? In order to create a better workplace environment through the remote work system, I would like to continue to look for it while referring to other companies’ initiatives.
